To get started with this particular recipe, we must prepare a few components. You can have baklava using 9 ingredients and 7 steps. Here is how you can achieve it.

The ingredients needed to make Baklava:
  1. Prepare 16 Phyllo Sheets
  2. Get 1 cup Chopped Mixed Nuts of your choice (pistachio, almonds & cashew)
  3. Get 100 grams Butter
  4. Prepare For the Sugar syrup (to pour on top)
  5. Make ready 1/4 cup Sugar
  6. Prepare 5 tbsp water
  7. Take 1 inch cinnamon stick
  8. Prepare 4-5 whole cardamom
  9. Make ready 1 lime (To prevent crystallisation)

The pre-Ottoman origin of the dish is unknown, but, in modern times, it is a common dessert. USE PISTACHIOs is the key to a more original baklava (according to my Turkish hubby). Walnuts are cheaper but pistachios definately make the baklava tastes better. Skip all those cloves and cinnamon, that stuff is for the Americanized taste.

Instructions to make Baklava:
  1. Melt the butter on low flame.
  2. Take one phyllo sheet & generously spread some butter on it, sprinkle some nuts, place one more phyllo sheet on it, brush it once again with some butter & sprinkle nuts.
  3. Roll it up using a chopstick or any thin stick. Pull it together to create beautiful creases. Make 7 to 8 of these or more depending the size of your tray. Cut it as desired.
  4. Place this in a baking tray & bake this on a pre heated oven at 180 degrees C for 25 to 30 mins or until it is golden.
  5. Remove it from the oven & while it is still hot, pour some sugar syrup on it.
  6. For making the sugar syrup, simply bring all the ingredients to a boil and let it cook down. Don’t over cook it else it will crystallise.
  7. Let it soak for 3 hours and then serve or you can store in an air tight container for upto a week.

Walnuts are cheaper but pistachios definately make the baklava tastes better. Skip all those cloves and cinnamon, that stuff is for the Americanized taste. Taste the nut, butter and the good syrup. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. When you remove the baklava from the oven, drizzle half the saucepan evenly all over the top.
